Description
A comforting homemade apple pie with a golden crust and a delicious sweet-sour filling.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
- 6 to 8 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix)
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Optional: 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, nuts like walnuts or pecans for topping
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter and blend until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually stir in the ice water until the dough comes together.
- Divide the dough in half, shape into balls, flatten into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Roll out one disc until it fits your 9-inch pie pan. Place the crust in the pan.
- In another bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Mix to coat the apples, then pour into the crust.
- Roll out the second disc and place it over the filling. Seal the edges and cut slits to allow steam to escape. Brush with beaten egg.
- Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 35-45 minutes until the apples are soft and the crust is golden brown.
Notes
Serve warm, optionally with powdered sugar or vanilla ice cream. Store at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for a week.
