Dairy Free Dinner Rolls

Description

Soft, pillowy dairy-free dinner rolls perfect for any occasion, these rolls have a subtle sweetness and tender texture to complement soups and stews.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ teaspoons instant yeast
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 cup warm water (235 millilitres)
  • 1 egg (room temperature)
  • 2 tablespoons oil (neutral oil)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 to 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour (385 to 450 grams)

Instructions

  1. Proof the yeast by placing it with sugar and warm water in a bowl and letting sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the egg, oil, and salt to the yeast mixture.
  3. Add 3 cups of flour and knead using a dough hook until smooth and slightly tacky, about 5–7 minutes.
  4. Cover and let dough rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Grease a baking pan and divide the dough into 14–16 pieces, shaping each into a ball.
  6. Let the shaped rolls rise for about 1 hour, covering again.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Bake for 20 minutes, until golden brown and hollow when tapped.
  9. Brush with oil or vegan butter and let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For vegan options, replace the egg with a flax egg or aquafaba. For added flavor, consider mixing in herbs or garlic.
