French Onion Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Description

A comforting sandwich featuring sweet, caramelized onions and nutty Gruyère cheese, perfectly grilled between slices of golden bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups onions, thinly sliced (about 2 medium onions)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 slices of bread (sourdough, country, or your choice)
  • 4 slices of cheese (e.g., Gruyère or Swiss)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring frequently, until caramelized (20-25 minutes).
  2. Season with salt and pepper; lower heat if necessary to avoid burning.
  3. Heat olive oil in another skillet for grilling the sandwiches.
  4. Assemble sandwiches: one slice of bread, a slice of cheese, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and the top slice of bread.
  5. Grill sandwiches in the skillet until golden brown and cheese begins to melt, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  6. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

For lower calories and sodium, consider reduced-fat cheese, whole-grain bread, and less butter. Customize with herbs or different cheeses as desired.
