Description
A comforting sandwich featuring sweet, caramelized onions and nutty Gruyère cheese, perfectly grilled between slices of golden bread.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups onions, thinly sliced (about 2 medium onions)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 4 slices of bread (sourdough, country, or your choice)
- 4 slices of cheese (e.g., Gruyère or Swiss)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring frequently, until caramelized (20-25 minutes).
- Season with salt and pepper; lower heat if necessary to avoid burning.
- Heat olive oil in another skillet for grilling the sandwiches.
- Assemble sandwiches: one slice of bread, a slice of cheese, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and the top slice of bread.
- Grill sandwiches in the skillet until golden brown and cheese begins to melt, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
For lower calories and sodium, consider reduced-fat cheese, whole-grain bread, and less butter. Customize with herbs or different cheeses as desired.
