Healthy Mozzarella Sticks with String Cheese


Description

A healthier, oven-baked version of classic mozzarella sticks using string cheese, perfect for snacks or appetizers.


Ingredients

  • 10 string cheese sticks
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Olive oil cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Unwrap each string cheese stick and cut each one in half to create two smaller sticks.
  2. In a small bowl, add the all-purpose flour.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and water until completely combined.
  4. In a third bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  5. Dip the cheese sticks into the flour, shaking off excess.
  6. Dip into the egg mixture, ensuring full coverage.
  7. Roll in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently.
  8. Place the breadcrumb-coated sticks on a lined baking sheet.
  9. Freeze for at least 1 hour.
  10. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  11. Remove sticks from the freezer and lightly spray with olive oil.
  12. Bake for 8–10 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  13. Serve immediately with marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

Ensure the cheese sticks freeze long enough to prevent leaking during baking. For extra crunch, panko breadcrumbs can be used.
