Description
Delicious homemade naan bread with a soft, pillowy texture, perfect for enjoying with curries or on its own.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons butter (for brushing)
- Optional: minced garlic, chopped cilantro for topping
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
- In another bowl, whisk together the warm water, yogurt, and olive oil until smooth.
- Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a rough dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface until it is smooth and elastic (about 5 minutes).
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat a skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into four equal balls. Roll each ball out into oval shapes or circles, about 1/4 inch thick.
- Cook each naan in the preheated skillet for about 1-2 minutes on one side, or until bubbles form and the bottom is lightly browned. Flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes on the other side.
- Remove from the skillet and immediately brush with melted butter. Add optional toppings like minced garlic or chopped cilantro if desired.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
Avoid overmixing the dough to ensure tenderness. Adjust cooking time based on the thickness of your naan. Experiment with toppings for unique variations.
