Homemade Naan Bread

Description

Delicious homemade naan bread with a soft, pillowy texture, perfect for enjoying with curries or on its own.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for brushing)
  • Optional: minced garlic, chopped cilantro for topping

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together the warm water, yogurt, and olive oil until smooth.
  3. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a rough dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface until it is smooth and elastic (about 5 minutes).
  4. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat a skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into four equal balls. Roll each ball out into oval shapes or circles, about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Cook each naan in the preheated skillet for about 1-2 minutes on one side, or until bubbles form and the bottom is lightly browned. Flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes on the other side.
  8. Remove from the skillet and immediately brush with melted butter. Add optional toppings like minced garlic or chopped cilantro if desired.
  9. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

Avoid overmixing the dough to ensure tenderness. Adjust cooking time based on the thickness of your naan. Experiment with toppings for unique variations.
