- 2 cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg, beaten
- Coarse sea salt for topping
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Knead the dough in the bowl or on a floured surface until smooth, about 5-7 minutes.
- Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large pot, bring about 10 cups of water to a boil and stir in the baking soda carefully.
- Punch down the dough, divide it into 8 pieces, and shape into pretzels.
- Boil each pretzel in the baking soda water for about 30 seconds, then place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Brush each pretzel with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
- Let them cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in a toaster oven for best results.
