Homemade Soft Pretzels

Description

Warm, golden-brown soft pretzels with a chewy texture and satisfying crust, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Coarse sea salt for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Knead the dough in the bowl or on a floured surface until smooth, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  4. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  5. In a large pot, bring about 10 cups of water to a boil and stir in the baking soda carefully.
  6. Punch down the dough, divide it into 8 pieces, and shape into pretzels.
  7. Boil each pretzel in the baking soda water for about 30 seconds, then place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  8. Brush each pretzel with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Let them cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in a toaster oven for best results.
