Homemade Bagels

Description

Delicious homemade bagels with a golden brown exterior and chewy texture, perfect for breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon malt syrup (optional)
  • Toppings (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or coarse salt, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture, and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  5. Punch down the dough and divide it into equal pieces (about 8).
  6. Roll each piece into a ball and poke a hole in the center to form a bagel shape.
  7. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add malt syrup if using. Boil the bagels for 1-2 minutes on each side, then remove and place on a greased baking sheet.
  8. If desired, sprinkle toppings on each bagel.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Let them cool before serving.
