A rich and indulgent chocolate cake inspired by the beloved children’s book, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients

- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
- Optional: 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for ganache
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix thoroughly.
- Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for about 2 minutes.
- Carefully stir in boiling water to create a thin batter.
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- While cooling, prepare the ganache by heating the heavy cream until boiling, then pour over chopped chocolate and stir until smooth. Optionally, stir in vanilla extract.
- Once cakes are cool, stack with ganache in between and pour remaining ganache on top.
Notes
For best results, allow cakes to cool completely before frosting to prevent the ganache from melting.
