Description
These soft whole wheat dinner rolls are comforting and versatile, perfect for any meal or occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups (≈240 g) whole wheat flour
- 1 cup (≈120 g) all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 cup (240 ml) warm water (about 105–115°F / 40–46°C)
- 2 tbsp olive oil (≈30 ml)
- 2 tbsp maple syrup or granulated sugar (≈25–40 g)
- 1 tsp salt
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, and salt.
- Add olive oil and maple syrup (or sugar) to the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
- Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease an 8×8 or 9×9 inch pan.
- Punch down the dough gently and divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a roll and place them seam-side down in the prepared pan.
- Cover the pan and let the rolls rise for another 30 minutes, until puffy.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes, until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before transferring to a rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
These rolls are great for freezing and can be made ahead for busy weeks. For rich flavor, brush with melted butter or egg wash before baking.
