Southern Style Dirty Rice

Description

A flavorful dish that combines ground meat with vegetables and spices for a warm, comforting meal reminiscent of Southern traditions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 lb ground beef or pork
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 2 stalks celery, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • Parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. In a medium saucepan, combine the rice and chicken broth, bringing it to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 20 minutes or until the rice is fully cooked. Remove from heat and let sit with the lid on.
  2. In a large skillet, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the ground meat and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  3. Add the diced onion, bell pepper, celery, and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the vegetables are tender and fragrant, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in the Cajun seasoning, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 2-3 minutes to let the flavors meld.
  5. Fluff the cooked rice with a fork and add it to the meat and vegetable mixture. Stir well to combine all the ingredients and heat through for another 2-3 minutes.
  6. Serve hot, garnished with sliced green onions and parsley.

Notes

Adjust Cajun seasoning to your spice preference. For added depth, brown the meat well and consider adding Worcestershire sauce.
