- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (85% lean recommended)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms (about 70–100 g)
- 1 shallot, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 tbsp gluten-free or all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups chicken or beef broth (360 ml)
- 1 cup skim milk (240 ml)
- 2 tbsp gluten-free tamari or soy sauce
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 (2 lb / ~907 g) bag tater tots
Instructions
- Preheat the oven according to the tater tot bag’s directions (commonly 400–425°F / 200–220°C).
- In a large, oven-proof skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, season with salt and pepper, and cook until no longer pink (6–8 minutes). Drain excess fat and set aside.
- In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium and melt butter. Add mushrooms and chopped shallot, season lightly, and sauté for 3–5 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and sauté for 1 more minute.
- Sprinkle flour into the skillet and whisk to combine with butter and juices. Cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in broth and milk, scraping up browned bits. Add tamari, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and smoked paprika. Simmer for 2–3 minutes until thickened.
- Stir the cooked ground beef into the gravy until evenly combined.
- Arrange tater tots in a single layer on top of the beef mixture. Bake according to the tater tot bag instructions (commonly 20–25 minutes) until golden and bubbly.
- Allow to rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a lighter version, swap ground beef for turkey or plant-based ground. For dairy-free, use plant-based milk and butter.
